The Kilkenny Group of Parishes

Visit St Canices Cathedral Kilkenny Web pageKilkenny is known as the Marble City and has a rapidly expanding tourist trade and is also developing as an international arts base with the annual Arts Festival held in the city. As well as the ancient cathedral church of St Canice , the city has three other churches attached to the Kilkenny Group of Parishes.

St John's Church is situated in the heart of Kilkenny city. Once an Augustinian Priory, the ruined Priory now stands next the church, a monument to ecclesiastical history.

Freshford is eight miles North-west of Kilkenny city and is a village of less than 632 inhabitants. In the centre of the village, there is a church of Ireland which has a famous hiberno-Romanesque doorway. Six miles from the village is Ballnamara Abbey. The village itself is located in a valley of fertile land.

Kilmanagh is situated in the west of Kilkenny county and is in the Slieve Ardagh hills, two miles from the Tipperary border. The village is the only rural settlement in the parish of Ballycullan. In recent times, one of the woods in the Slieve Ardagh hills has been commissioned as a natural Irish woodland and abseiling and rock-climbing are carried on in a nearby quarry.
