The Girls Friendly Society was founded in London in 1875 by an Irish woman - Mrs Elizabeth Townsend. She wanted to help lonely girls who came from the country to work in the city, It was and indeed to this day is a society if friendship and recreation in which all girls might share, bound together in a fellowship of Christian Love and service. The organisations purpose is to unite, for the glory of God in one fellowship of Prayer and service, all girls and women throughout the world, to promote friendship and uphold purity in thought, work and deed.
Now after 125 years the Girls Friendly Society is still very much alive and service girls and women in many countries throughout the world. The motto, Purpose and prayer, has not changed through the years but one generation after another has found fresh inspiration in them. Our Branches In Cashel and Ossory the Girls Friendly Society branches are very active. Last Autumn our leaders attended a training Day in Castlecomer which examined the current years craft syllabus and was followed in a discussion ion Child labour in the 21st century. Birthday celebration commences in April when Cashel and Ossory were delighted to welcome over 130 girls and leaders from all over the Ireland. It was a fun filled week end with activities held on campus in Kilkenny College along with trips to Baltinglass Adventure centre and Kilkenny Castle to name but a few. Closing worship in St Canice's Cathedral, Kilkenny, brought the week end to a close. The annual service and prizegiving was held on Sunday 26th May and as part of the 125th celebrations a service of Holy Communion was broadcast from RTE in June. Two day trips also took place during the Year. As you can see the GFS is very active in this Diocese and we havn't even mentioned the many activities of individual GFS branches, who have their own excellent programmes of crafts, friendship and recreation. World Project The world project the Diocese is currently supporting is to build a Girls Friendly Society house and help with the training of GFS leaders in Papua, New Guinea.
